The Society and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation created the National Geographic Society / Buffett Awards for Leadership in Conservation to recognize and celebrate the unknown heroes who work in this field. Each year two prizes are presented: one for achievements in Africa (established in 2002) and the other for achievements in Latin America (established in 2005).
The beneficiaries of these awards have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the administration and protection of natural resources in their regions and countries. In addition, they are inspiring conservation advocates who serve as role models and mentors.
The winners of the award are chosen from among the nominations sent to the National Geographic Society through a rigorous peer review process. The recipients chosen each year are honored at a ceremony in Washington, DC, and receive a one-time award of $ 25,000 to support their work in progress.
Application deadline: November 30, 2018
