The Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) funds and directs scientific research and educational initiatives on waste management practices to benefit the participants in the industry and the communities they serve.

EREF is a non-profit organization and is one of the largest sources of funding for research that increases sustainable solid waste management practices in North America.

Thematic areas

  • Waste minimization
  • Recycling
  • Conversion of waste to energy, biofuels, chemical products or other useful products
  • Strategies to promote the diversion to higher and better uses (for example, diversion of organic substances, market analysis, optimized material management, logistics, etc.)
  • Landfills

Amounts of subsidies:

The previously granted subsidies have ranged between USD $ 15,000 and USD $ 500,000 with an average subsidy amount in the last years of US $ 160,000. It should be noted that the proposed investigations exceeding US $ 300,000 must contain enough details to justify the need for a higher amount than the average requested.

The typical durations of the project are approximately 2 years. In addition, EREF has two deadlines per year for the previous proposals, on January 6 and June 1. The projects and research previously funded by the foundation can be viewed on its website at

It is suggested that you consult the EREF website as soon as possible to familiarize yourself with the resources and requirements for the application.
